dux needs macOS 15 or later. It runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs that can run macOS 15.
Choose a version
- Mac App Store. For most people. Free, with Pro as an in-app purchase. It runs in Apple’s sandbox: it reads the disks and folders you pick and cannot run tool cleanups such as Homebrew’s or Xcode’s.
- Direct download. For developers, power users and organizations. The same app plus tool cleanups, Full Disk Access, the command line tool and Business, signed with our Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Pro bought in the App Store works here too.
App Store or direct download compares the two and explains how to move without paying twice. Get either one on the download page.
Your first scan
- Open dux. The Welcome screen asks what to scan: the startup disk, your home folder or a folder of your own.
- Choose a target and press Start Scan.
- Watch the Overview fill in while the scan runs. A scan never changes anything on your disk.
- Open Impact to see suggestions ranked by what they really free, each with a safety level.
Nothing is removed until you review it. The Full Disk Access guide explains why some folders may show as unknown.
Install the command line tool
The dux command comes with the direct download. In Settings, General, choose to install the command line tool. It links into /usr/local/bin (asks for your administrator password) or ~/.local/bin (no password). macOS does not look in ~/.local/bin by default, so add it to the PATH in your ~/.zshrc if Terminal says dux is not found. Uninstall removes only that link.
Text output is free. JSON and CSV output and clean are part of Pro, and report is part of Business. The Developers page lists every command.
